Despite criticism of the selection, coach Geoff Moylan had every reason to smile at the end of this match, calling on all 22 players to participate.
There were star performances from Buccaneers flanker Conor Hartigan, as well as winger Niall O’Brien, second row Mark Warburton and stunning contributions from substitute half-back Jerry Hurley and David Delaney.
In addition, full-back Denis Hurley had a marvellous game in defence, and stopped two certain Scottish tries.
The visitors looked magnificent in the opening 15 minutes. Mike Adamson kicked a penalty and then converted a remarkable try from winger Mark Robertson.
But the Scots flattered to deceive. They were unable to come to grips with the stranglehold the Irish took in the forward battle.
Warburton and second row partner Alan Maher dominated the lineout and the Irish scrum was spectacularly effective.
Ireland edged their way back into the game with a fantastic try from Hartigan - the third successive lineout steal, and the flanker made it all the way to the line for a try converted by Gareth Steenson. Steenson added a penalty after 29 minutes and then kicked a conversion from a David Quinlan pushover try just before the break.
Early in the second half Ireland sought to embellish their lead but instead conceded more points to Scotland via an Adamson penalty.
But Steenson, whilst hardly endearing himself to the home supporters with a shaky performance, did add penalties in the 15th and 31st minutes of the half before being substituted for Delaney.
The Shannon player used the angles to much better effect and his half-back partner Hurley created the last try seconds from the end with a clever cross-kick to set O’Brien free to get over in the corner. Delaney converted from the right-hand touchline to give Ireland the victory they deserved.
