Cork native and jockey Michael O’Sullivan is in intensive care following a serious fall at Thurles on Thursday.
O’Sullivan was riding Wee Charlie for Gerard O’Leary in the second race of the day and fell at the last in the two-mile Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase.
O’Sullivan immediately received medical attention on the track before a decision was made to delay the remainder of the card due to “a medical emergency”.
The rest of the meeting was later abandoned as the air ambulance arrived to take O’Sullivan, a Cheltenham festival-winning rider, to Cork University Hospital.
“Michael is in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital being treated for his injuries sustained at Thurles yesterday and is receiving the best medical care," Dr Jennifer Pugh, chief medical officer of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, posted on Twitter.
“Michael’s family wish to express their gratitude for all the well wishes.”
