Hanagan claims jockey's crown
Paul Hanagan has been crowned champion jockey with one race of the Flat season to go at Doncaster.
After Times Up landed the totesport.com November Handicap under Dane O'Neill, Hanagan was confirmed as champion jockey for the very first time.
He may have finished unplaced on Tepmokea after leading for much of the contest, but never will a jockey have been so happy after being beaten.
Hughes was on Senate for John Gosden but the favourite never threatened to get involved at the business end.
Hanagan said: “I’m gobsmacked. There are so many people to thank, they know who they are, I’d be here all day. My agent Richard Hale has done a fantastic job.
“I’d just like to say what a gent Richard Hughes has been. I had great respect for him before this but I have even more now.”
Hanagan’s boss, Richard Fahey, said: “It’s great, he’s gone through a lot. I’m quite emotional.”
