Beauty team wait on Cup decision

Profound Beauty is not certain to run in the Melbourne Cup.

Dermot Weld’s laudable mare is prominent in the betting for the Flemington showpiece, but could miss out if the ground is too fast.

The Moyglare Stud-owned six-year-old turned in another impressive display in Saturday’s Irish St Leger when finishing second behind fellow Melbourne Cup contender Sans Frontieres.

Stan Cosgrove, Moyglare Stud manager, said: “She’s perfect afterwards and it was a grand performance on that ground, which was very testing.

“The Melbourne Cup is under consideration but we’ve not made a final decision.

“She has to go into quarantine on the 23rd (September) and Pat Smullen has already said he can ride her.

“The problem might be the ground. If it’s rock hard it will be pointless running as her as they don’t water out there – that could be a big problem for her.”

Profound Beauty, fifth in the Melbourne Cup two years ago, has been saddled with 54 kilograms for the November 2 feature – three kilos less than Sans Frontieres.

Weld is also considering the Canadian International at Woodbine on October 16 for the hardy daughter of Danehill.

“I’ll speak with her owners and think about it (her next outing),” the two-time Melbourne Cup winner told Sky Racing World.

“We’ll look at everything – the Canadian International is another possible. The Canadians are very keen to get her.

“They pay the expenses unlike in Australia – (Australia) doesn’t pay the travelling costs to bring those horses like the Canadians do.”
