Gibson going out on a high

With the curtain poised to fall on his 24-year career in the saddle, Dale Gibson provided a fitting end to his penultimate act by visiting the winner's enclosure at York aboard Jeannie Galloway.

With the curtain poised to fall on his 24-year career in the saddle, Dale Gibson provided a fitting end to his penultimate act by visiting the winner's enclosure at York aboard Jeannie Galloway.

The final chapter of the light-weight jockey's story will be played out with three mounts on the Knavesmire during Saturday afternoon, but he rode what is likely to prove his final winner in the Garbutt & Elliott Nursery.

Richard Fahey's filly was the 41-year-old's only ride of the afternoon, and the 7-1 chance joined Bossy Kitty on the line to dead-heat for first place - 24 years to the month after Gibson's first winner on Granny's Bank at Pontefract in 1985.

The rider, whose big wins include the 1989 Stewards' Cup on Very Adjacent and the William Hill Trophy aboard Artie in 2002, said: "That wasn't a set-up!

"It is great to go out with a winner as my three rides tomorrow are all 25-1 and drifting.

"It is nice to ride a winner for Richard, who along with Mark Johnston is the top man in the north."

The American Embassy inadvertently provided Frankie Dettori with a winner as the Italian struck aboard Godolphin's German import Peligroso in the Acorn Web Offset Conditions Stakes.

The Italian would have headed to France for trainer Saeed bin Suroor given the option, but a visa application denied him the chance and he instead made the visit to Yorkshire for an all-the-way success on the 3-1 chance.

"I had to go to the American Embassy on Monday to get my visa renewed for the Breeders' Cup," Dettori explained. "They kept it for a couple of days so I didn't get it back until Wednesday, when the declarations had been made.

"I would have chosen to go to France, but thankfully it has worked out for me."

Felday represented Cambridgeshire-winning trainer Hughie Morrison in the Best Odds Guaranteed At totesport.com Handicap, and the 11-2 favourite made up for his unfavourable draw in the Ayr Bronze Cup last month with a near four-length rout under Steve Drowne.

Morrison's representative, Andrew Dare, said: "His owner, Barbara Hammond, is gravely ill so we are delighted that he has managed to win for her.

"He won the race on his side at Ayr, but was beaten overall by the draw.

"Steve said he is an Ayr Gold Cup prospect, and we have something nice to go to war with next year."

Walvis Bay showed promise when making the frame at the track on his debut, and better was come as the 2-1 favourite returned a little over a month later for a three-length call in the EBF Maiden Stakes.

Trainer Tom Tate said: "He did it well in the end and is a real two-year-old type.

"He has always been quite useful and there will be more to come, so we will keep him going for the time being."

Michael Jarvis' Russian Spirit (6-1) showed plenty of speed dropped back to five furlongs in the Parsonge Country House Hotel Stakes, while Veiled Applause (6-1) edged out Persian Peril in the wewillbuyyourcar.com Apprentice Stakes.
