Eric McNamara is to consider Ponmeoath for the Hennessy Gold Cup after the nine-year-old’s brave effort in the Kerry National.

Ponmeoath had won the Listowel feature in 2007 and 2008 but was anchored by top weight this time, yet still put up a bold display, finishing sixth to Northern Alliance

The County Limerick trainer believes his gelding is an ideal type for the prestigious staying handicap chase at Newbury on November 28.

“He’s 100%. I thought he ran very well on Wednesday. He stayed on well, but it was the weight that beat him really,” said McNamara.

“He’s been out in the paddock and is as happy as Larry.

“We might consider bringing him to England for one of those big handicap chases, maybe something like the Hennessy might just suit him. We’ll have a look at that.”

Meanwhile, Tony Martin is in no hurry to make plans for Northern Alliance and third home Royal County Star.

“Northern Alliance came out of the race grand, not a bother,” said the County Meath handler.

“He won’t run for a month or so, we’ll just see how he is.

“Royal County Star has also come out it well. We have no plans for him, we’ll just feel our way.”
