Genki going for big sprint double

Steve Drowne feels Genki has solid claims of becoming the first horse since Coastal Bluff 13 years ago to complete the Stewards’ Cup/William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup double in Scotland tomorrow.

Drowne steered Roger Charlton’s sprinter to success in the fog at Glorious Goodwood and believes the track at Ayr will suit his mount better.

“He’s gone up 7lb and it’s hard to win both races, but he’s got a good chance and he seems to be in great form at home,” he said.

“He goes on most grounds, stall 17 may not be the best draw but we won the Stewards’ Cup off a bad draw (10) as well, so hopefully he can overcome that again.

“I’ve got a bit of choice from the draw, but I’d have preferred to be high and nearer the stands side than the far side but we’ll see what happens.

“He’s up against it, but he’s not without a chance and the track at Ayr will probably suit him better than Goodwood, so that’s a plus.”
