Schiaparelli takes Coutts Goodwood Cup
Schiaparelli struck for Godolphin with a game performance to win the Coutts Goodwood Cup today.
The multiple Group One winner when trained in Germany landed his first success for new connections as the well-backed 6-4 favourite.
Frankie Dettori kicked on over a half a mile out and the six-year-old held the late surge of Mourilyan (5-1).
The Betchworth Kid, the 33-1 outsider, was a long way back in third.
Tungsten Strike took the field along in the early stages, and was six lengths in front for a while, with the veteran Caracciola second.
However, the pack was unfazed and the race quickly changed complexion soon after they made the turn for home.
Dettori took the bull by the horns and gained first run on Mourilyan, who was towards the rear.
Mourilyan looked a big threat a furlong out, but Dettori had wisely kept something in reserve on Schiaparelli.
Saeed bin Suroor's charge pulled out more close home to win by one length from Ryan Moore's mount.
The Betchworth Kid was 12 lengths away to take minor honours.
Dettori said: "This fellow is a good horse. It's his first try over this trip and he stayed well and he won like a nice stayer.
"I had a little look and I saw Ryan (Moore) behind me, but my horse wasn't slowing down so I thought he'd be very hard to get past.
"He's very versatile as he stays well and a mile and a half in soft ground is fine for him.
"He can do both."
Simon Crisford, racing manager for Godolphin, said: "He had been off the track for a while but ran well on his first start this season at Newmarket.
"We entered him in this race to see what it looked like. It looked winnable, so we decided to run.
"He will now go back to a mile and a half for his next race, which will probably be in Baden-Baden in early September.
"He does stay well and had already proved himself over a mile and six furlongs before today, so stamina wasn't an issue, and the ground here is great.
"The horse is a very good horse - he was second in the Prix Foy last year and had previously won Group Ones in Germany."
Mourilyan's trainer, Gary Moore, said: "The other fellow is a triple Group One winner and ours isn't, so you have to say he's run a great race.
"I'm not going to slate our horse at all. That's the way he has to be ridden so we're very pleased.
"We'll go to York now for the Lonsdale Cup."
Michael Bell was pleased with the performance of The Betchworth Kid.
He added: "He's run a great trial for the Ebor there, as long as he gets his ground."
