Weld celebrates double in Galway
Dermot Weld quickly has completed a double at the Galway Races as Ghimaar defied top-weight in the carlton.ie/galwaycity (QR) Handicap over two miles.
The master of Rosewell House had won the last two renewals of this valuable event but Ghimaar looked up against it having failed to get his head in front since this day 12 months ago, when he had scored in a 12-furlong handicap.
However, the 10-1 chance was always going well and after hitting the front early in the straight, Robbie McNamara only had to keep his mount up to his work to score by two and a half lengths from Evening Rushour.
It was a second successive victory in the race for the jockey having guided Weld’s Majestic Concorde to victory last year.
Weld said: "He was the class horse in the race but the weight was my worry. The slower they went the better it suited us and Robbie had him beautifully positioned.
"The ground was definitely a bit slower than he would have liked and he’s a horse we would certainly enter for the Ebor at York."
