Histoire maker set for Rasen

Histoire de Moeurs could bid for Market Rasen’s Summer Plate on Saturday following a game victory in the Birmingham Mail Summer Handicap Chase at Stratford.

The Peter Bowen-trained mare held Irish raider Jubilant Note by a length and a half to deny Ruby Walsh a first victory in Britain since recovering from a broken ankle two months ago.

Bernie Wharfe, who claims 5lb, put up 2lb overweight on Histoire de Moeurs (9-1) but always had the six-year-old handy and kicked on three out.

“I was pleased with her. He gave her a good ride, I was very impressed,” said Bowen.

“She’ll go for the Summer Plate. She’ll get in there now with a penalty with a bit of luck.”

Bowen was speaking from Southwell, where he also struck with 14-1 shot Ripalong Lad in division two of the totequadpot Maiden Chase.

All eyes were on Walsh but it was fellow Irish jockey Noel Fehily who stole the limelight with a fantastic 841-1 treble.

He struck on Classic Shot (8-1), Is It Me (16-1) and Donaldson (9-2) – all for different trainers.

The winning streak began when he brought the David Evans-trained Classic Shot with a well-timed run to collar Cloonavery at the final fence and go on to win the Birmingham Mail Handicap Chase by two and three-quarter lengths.

Then he steered John Mackie’s top-weight Is It Me to a three-length victory in the Birmingham Mail Handicap Hurdle, despite a bad mistake at the final flight.

And he completed his trio with a 13-length romp on Donaldson for Jonjo O’Neill in the Birmingham Mail Novices’ Chase.

Walsh could only manage another second place on Quell The Storm behind Cootehill in the Birmingham Mail “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle from his three rides.

Bathwick Man (13-2) followed up last month’s Worcester success in the Birmingham Mail Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.

Johnny Farrelly set sail a long way out from home on the David Pipe-trained gelding and had enough in the tank to keep Sagredo at bay by three and a half lengths.

Brendan Powell’s Fongoli (8-1) held Minder’s persistent challenge by a length when making all the running in the Birmingham Mail Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle in the hands of Willie McCarthy.
