Cheka connections eye Million prize

Eve Johnson Houghton believes there is further improvement to come from The Cheka following his fine second in the Solario Stakes at Sandown.

The juvenile is held in high regard by connections and made a hugely impressive start to his career with a 10-length victory in an Ascot maiden.

The son of Xaar was beaten half a length by Sri Putra on his first start in Group company yesterday and his trainer is now eyeing a trip to Newmarket for the Tattersalls Timeform Million.

“We were delighted with the run and he probably just hit the front too soon,” said Johnson Houghton.

“He was very green and once he got to the lead he just didn’t seem to know what to do but he will learn in time.

“The plan is now to go to Newmarket for the Million and then hopefully for the Dewhurst.”

Connections of Sri Putra are also considering a tilt at the Million on October 4, but Johnson Houghton would not be afraid of a rematch.

“Our horse is still improving so he could turn the form around and there is a lot of money on offer,” she added.

“I think he deserves another crack at a big prize and it is there to be shot at.”
