First Goodwood win for O'Shea

Brian Meehan was out of luck in the Group One Darley Prix Morny but his stable struck just moments earlier as Tadhg O'Shea gained a first Goodwood success aboard Mr Hichens in the South Coast Handicap.

While Meehan watched his Gallagher take second in the French feature, O'Shea got the leg up for the 45th time on the Sussex Downs and guided the wandering 10-1 chance to a two-length success.

Meehan's assistant Patrick McEwan said: "He is a character but Tadhg rode him to win last time at Nottingham and they seem to get on well.

"He did it well in the end and probably got to the front too soon."

Heavy overnight rain played into the hands of Michael Blanshard's Perfect Flight, who benefited from a strong Kirsty Milczarek drive to land the EBF Chichester Observer Fillies' Handicap.

While Martin Dwyer elected to take 6-4 favourite Maimoona down the centre of the course, Milczarek kept the daughter of Hawk Wing to the stands rail and hit the front with a furlong left to run.

The 10-1 chance then pulled clear to collect by three lengths, and provide her rider with a first win since riding out her claim.

Blanshard said of his winner: "She wants her own space and doesn't like being crowed, and she did like the ground today.

"She has always worked well at home but we were confused when she wasn't performing through the summer, but we now know that is down to the ground."

Michael Stoute saw Patkai fail in his Ladbrokes St Leger trial at the track 24 hours earlier, but enjoyed much better fortune as Crystal Capella obliged as the 2-1 favourite in the Listed EBF Alice Keppel Fillies' Handicap.

Winner of her two previous starts, the daughter of Cape Cross came with her challenge under Jimmy Quinn but found William Knight's Casilda a tough opponent and the pair had a nip-and-tuck battle through the final furlong.

Quinn gave maximum assistance from the saddle and ensured the photo finish went his way by recording a short-head success on the filly, who was landing a hat-trick.

The rider said: "A horse came to her on the outside mid-race and she picked up the bit and started to do too much.

"I managed to get her to settle again and we crept into the race down the hill.

"I then couldn't get into fifth gear on the ground. She wasn't enjoying it, but has gone in it like a decent and improving filly would do.

"She has had three wins and a second from her four runs this year and she is still a big and immature filly."
