The annual Galway Races get underway this afternoon, with thousands of spectators expected to descent on the Balybrit racecourse in the next seven days.

More than €2m in prize money is up for grabs at this year's festival.

The two highlights of the event are the Galway Plate on Wednesday and the Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday.

The big race today is the GPT Galway Handicap at 7pm, where the Dermot Weld-trained Majestic Concorde is likely to go off favourite.

Weld has been the festival's leading trainer for 21 of the last 22 years.
