Apprentice jockey Danielle McCreery appears to have escaped serious injury after a nasty incident at Redcar on Thursday evening.

McCreery was unshipped from the Ruth Carr-trained Only A Splash going down to the start for the Market Cross Jewellers Apprentice Handicap.

The six-furlong contest was delayed by 35 minutes while on-course medical staff attended to the rider.

She was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and despite the initial prognosis not looking promising, her injuries are not as bad as first feared.

“It looks a lot better than it did last night thankfully,” said McCreery’s agent, Andrew Waterworth.

“She suffered concussion but it is my understanding that she was conscious in the helicopter.

“She is able to get up and (move about) so she has full use of all her limbs and, while we haven’t had the full medical reports, she appears to have got away without a serious injury.

“Danielle would like to thank Ruth though for staying with her until 2am when her family arrived.”
