Dun and dusted at Newmarket opener
Duntulm gave an extraordinary performance to win Newmarket’s opener on 2000 Guineas day after apparently wrecking his chance in the stalls.
Henry Candy’s colt sat down in the gates and lost around 12 lengths in the Stan James 08000 383384 Handicap, but jockey Dane O’Neill had luck on his side as the field only set off at a modest pace, allowing him to get back into contention.
The 14-1 shot cruised through the field, leading over a furlong out and had enough in the tank to hold Flawed Genius by a neck.
“I don’t think many horses give that much ground away at the start and still win,” said Candy.
“I don’t think he stayed in the Zetland and we’ll look at the Hunt Cup, but he needs some more match practice first.”
