Samira strikes gold for Cumani
Samira Gold grabbed her fourth victory of the campaign in the Listed EBF attheraces.com Best Odds John Musker Fillies’ Stakes at Yarmouth.
Only once in five previous starts had she failed to finish in the money and Seb Sanders ensured Luca Cumani’s progressive three-year-old made the frame once again.
After getting to grips with her over two furlongs out, Sanders kept working on the 11-4 shot and she stretched clear inside the distance to keep Shorthand and Ryan Moore at bay by a length and a half.
Winning owner Jaber Abdullah’s racing manager Bruce Raymond said: “She has been trained brilliantly as she is a little delicate and she does get excited, but they have kept her calm today.
“Luca will step her up in grade now and she looked as though she stayed well here, which is good to see as Luca had been sceptical about her staying early on in her career.”
Moore’s panache in the saddle had earlier been seen to good effect in the WBX.COM £25 Bet For New Accounts Stakes as he galvanised 4-1 chance Gyroscope to score on her first crack at a mile and a quarter.
However, the win – in which she accounted for Voliere by a length and three-quarters – could well be the last time the Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly is seen on a racecourse.
Chris Richardson, managing director of owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: “We might end on a high with her and send her to the paddocks. She is a half-sister to Arakan so is a valuable prospect.
“She can be tricky, but she was very calm today and Ryan said she would get even further if we decide to give her one more race.”
Voliere’s rider Jamie Spencer picked up a one-day ban (September 30) for careless riding over two furlongs out.
The Michael Jarvis-trained Tasdeer left his debut running well behind as he thoroughly outpointed his rivals in the EBF/Jerry Garcia Memorial Maiden Stakes.
Having been as green as grass on his debut, the Rahy colt looked much more the finished article this time and strode clear over a furlong out under Richard Hills for a cosy four-length success.
Jarvis said of the 9-4 favourite: “He was exceptionally green last time at Lingfield and his work since then has shown he has come on considerably.
“He’ll have one more run this season, probably in a conditions race, and seven furlongs is his trip for the moment. I see him as more of a miler next year.”
Street Star went one better than on her first two starts as she edged out odds-on favourite Applauded to take the EBF/Bennetts Electrical Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.
Spencer made virtually all on the 100-30 shot, who had to find plenty in the closing stages to hold the 4-6 market leader by a short head.
Trainer James Fanshawe said: “She was so keen the last time when we dropped her in so we changed the tactics and rode her handy.
“She had the rail, which helped, and she was jolly game at the finish.”
Spencer and Fanshawe combined to take the Sea-Deer Handicap with Fondled (3-1), who also provided Cheveley Park with a double as the filly swept from last to first for a half-length success.
Fanshawe added: “She’ll improve again with another year on her back and we’ll she how she is before deciding if she runs again this term.”
A drop down to bottom of the ladder enabled Present (7-1) to open her account in the Danny Wright Memorial Selling Stakes, while Border Artist (15-2) took the Wordingham Plant Hire Handicap.
