Flood upbeat on Ireland chance

Fran Flood is “hopeful” of G V A Ireland repeating last year’s success in the John Smith’s Midlands Grand National Chase at Uttoxeter tomorrow.

With the weights going up 10lb at the overnight stage, G V A Ireland will carry 10st 7lb – 4lb more than in 2006.

“He’s in good form. He’s going over there to defend the title he won last year,” said Flood.

“We’re hopeful of a good run. He’s been round there before. He’s got a bit more weight in it than he had last year but we are still entitled to take our chance. We think he’s in good form. He’s definitely well in himself. Mick Fitzgerald rides him as Ruby (Walsh) has to ride Ladalko for Paul Nicholls.”

There are two other Irish challengers – Tony Martin’s Newbay Prop and Jaqouille, trained by Arthur Moore.

“Newbay Prop must have a chance as well. He’s a good staying horse,” added Flood.

The 18-strong field is headed by top-weight Ladalko from the Nicholls yard while all eyes will be on the Venetia Williams-trained Nil Desperandum.

The 10-year-old will be bidding to consolidate his position as ante-post favourite for the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree next month following his victory in the Eider Chase at Newcastle.
