Joes Edge shock winner of William Hill Trophy
Ferdy Murphy's Joes Edge caused a huge shock by winning the William Hill Trophy at 50-1 in a three-way photograph.
Andrew McNamara had driven 7-1 co-favourite Distant Thunder in to what looked a race-winning advantage between the final two fences.
Fitzgerald set off in pursuit on Juveigneur – another of the market leaders - and was gaining hand over fist inside the final half-furlong.
But all the while Davy Russell was getting a tremendous run out of Joes Edge, a former Scottish Grand National winner, and he got up to win in the final stride of a blanket finish.
There was a short head between the winner and Juveigneur and the same distance back to Distant Thunder in third, with Mon Mome fourth.
Murphy said: ``He won the Scottish National and it's just taken a while for him to come back down to a favourable mark again.
“I didn’t think he’d got there, but the sun was in my eyes and somebody rang me who thought we’d got up and won.
“I wouldn’t think it’s too soft out there as this horse needs good ground.
“I hope he gets in the National. He’s borderline as he’s on 134, but we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed he does.
“It’s nice having winners down here.”
