Jockey Reilly to appeal ban

Brian Reilly has lodged an appeal against being disqualified for 18 months following last month's Horseracing Regulatory Authority corruption inquiry.

Brian Reilly has lodged an appeal against being disqualified for 18 months following last month's Horseracing Regulatory Authority corruption inquiry.

But fellow jockey Dean Williams has decided not to contest the same punishment.

The two riders were warned off for their involvement with bookmaker and former owner Owen Churchill, and had until the close of office hours today to appeal.

"Brian Reilly has lodged an appeal, but Dean Williams hasn't," said HRA spokesman Owen Byrne.

"Reilly can ride until his appeal is heard.

"I understand from a newspaper report that Williams is going to try to work at Greg Chung's yard, but he hasn't written to us yet and his warning off starts tomorrow morning which means he can't work there, at least for the moment."

A statement from the HRA added: "His (Williams) licence is therefore removed and he is prevented from entering licensed premises (racecourses and training yards).

"It would be a breach of the Rules of Racing for a licensed person to communicate with Williams in connection with horseracing as of tomorrow morning."

Churchill was disqualified for eight years having been found to have instigated a corrupt scheme which is believed to have netted him £56,000 (€83,313) from laying 10 horses.
