Hockenheim strikes at Carlisle

Paddy Brennan rode his first winner at Carlisle when Hockenheim put up a fine staying performance to take the News & Star Maiden Hurdle.

Brennan, who is first jockey to Hockenheim's owners Andrea and Graham Wylie, sent Howard Johnson's five-year-old into the lead at the fifth flight in the three-mile-one-furlong test.

He then opted to make the rest of the running, keeping on well up the final hill to pass the post with six lengths to spare over Somedo Somedont.

Graham Wylie said: "He stays and jumps well and as you can see from the size of him, he was bought to be a chaser.

"We will not do too much with him over hurdles this season and he will need time between his races.

"It is nice to have another winner on the board."
