Top American sprinter Lost In The Fog has been put down after suffering from internal cancer.

Specialists found three cancerous tumours in his spleen and along his back that could have been growing for up to a year.

The four-year-old colt won his first 10 starts only to be beaten for the first time when unplaced in the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Despite being well-beaten at odds-on by Silver Train, Lost In The Fog was still voted winner of the Eclipse award, and in all he won 11 of his 14 starts and just under $1m (€790,000) in prize money.

“We accomplished what we wanted to do,” said trainer Greg Gilchrist.

“It was all about giving him quality (time). We did everything we could for him. He was happy and content right up to the end. He went quietly and easily,” he told www.bloodhorse.com.
