Dettori confirms Icon ride
Frankie Dettori has confirmed he will ride Sixties Icon in the Ladbrokes St Leger at York on Saturday week.
The rider partnered Jeremy Noseda’s charge to win the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood and with his employer Godolphin not having a runner, Dettori is free to take the mount in the final Classic.
He told the Racing Post: “At this stage the plan is that I will be going to ride some nice horses for Godolphin at York, and will be available to ride Sixties Icon in the Leger because Godolphin will not have a runner in the race.
“I wouldn’t want to comment on his chances – all I’ll say for sure is that unless our plans change, I’ll be riding him.”
Dettori’s decision means Brian Meehan will have to find a new partner for Red Rocks should he run in the race as the Italian rider has been on board for his last three starts.
Ed Dunlop will also be facing reduced jockey options for star mare Ouija Board in the Irish Champion Stakes as Dettori rode her to win the Nassau Stakes last time.
