Smart prospect flies flag
Bryan Smart’s Hellvelyn flies the flag for Britain in the Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
The unbeaten Coventry Stakes winner faces six rivals in the Group One feature over six furlongs, headed by Holy Roman Emperor.
However, he had Aidan O’Brien’s runner more than seven lengths back in 15th place at Royal Ascot.
“He’s very well. He did a breeze yesterday and he’s in good form,” said the Thirsk trainer.
“He’s in good nick, but it’s the first time he’s gone out of the country so we’ll have to see how he travels.
“He left for Ireland this morning. My head lad who rides him in all his work and the girl who looks after him have gone with him, so there’ll be no problem.
“It’s competitive, but we’ve beaten Holy Roman Emperor before, so looking at it they’ve got us to beat.
“Our horse proved it at Ascot so let’s hope he carries it on.”
Holy Roman Emperor redeemed himself after the Royal meeting with a three-quarter length victory over Drayton in the Group Two Railway Stakes over Sunday’s course and distance.
Drayton, trained by Tommy Stack, bids to turn the tables while Con Collins runs King Of Swords and David Wachman is represented by Rabatash.
The field is completed by two fillies from Kevin Prendergast, the unbeaten Brazilian Bride and Miss Beatrix.
Holy Roman Emperor is 11-10 favourite with Irish bookmakers Cashmans while Hellvelyn is 11-4.
