Toldo, winner of this year's John Smith’s Northumberland Plate is out of the totesport Ebor after suffering a setback.

George Moore’s gelding gained a resolute victory at odds of 33-1 under Nelson De Souza to hold off River Alhaarth by a neck in the Pitmen’s Derby at Newcastle on July 1.

It was shortly afterwards that connections decided to postpone Toldo’s mid-season break in order prepare him for a crack at the £200,000 (€296,000) York showpiece on August 23.

However, Moore revealed today that the four-year-old will not be contesting Europe’s richest handicap.

“He has got a bit of heat in one of his legs,” the Yorkshire handler confirmed. “He had a scan this morning and we will know the results in a few days.

“Therefore I can say he definitely won’t be running in the Ebor. It’s a shame but that’s racing – full of ups and downs,” concluded a philosophical Moore.

Toldo had been a 16-1 chance with Coral and William Hill.
