Meehan considering Leger for Rocks

Red Rocks delighted Brian Meehan with his second-place finish in the Grand Prix de Paris on Friday and the progressive colt could now be set for a tilt at the Ladbrokes St Leger.

The Manton handler is considering sending the Galileo colt for the Great Voltigeur at York next month before an assault on the world’s oldest Classic at York on September 9.

Another option for the King Edward VII Stakes runner-up is a trip to America later in the season for their top international races.

Reflecting on the French outing, in which Red Rocks was ridden by Frankie Dettori, Meehan said: “I was delighted with him and he ran a big race. In an ideal world you can find a lead but the pace wasn’t good enough so Frankie took it up.

“He is a nice, progressive horse and is developing all of the time.

“He has scope for further physical development and I will consider going down the Voltigeur and Leger route with him.

“There are plenty of options for him, though, and he could even go across for the big races in North America in the autumn.”

Meehan’s stable star David Junior is set to resume work this week after enjoying a short holiday on the back of his success in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown earlier this month.

“He has had a week off but he enjoys working so much that is about all the time he can have off,” said Meehan.

“He will start cantering again this week and we then have to make our minds up whether to go for the International at York or the Irish Champion Stakes.”
