Road on course for Jersey
Saville Road, winner of last month’s Ousden Conditions Stakes, is likely to reappear in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The Mozart colt came with a late rattle to score in eye-catching fashion at Newmarket last month and trainer Declan Daly may give him a racecourse gallop to sharpen him up for the Group Three contest on June 21.
He said: “He has come out of his first start of the season well. The plan now is to go to the Jersey and not to be tempted to run him before that.
“He is a horse who runs best when he is fresh. We got him to win first time out both this season and last year.
“He’s earned his place in the Jersey and it looks the perfect race for him. I’m not overly concerned about stepping him up in class – I’ve got to have faith in the horse.
“We will probably give him a racecourse gallop somewhere between now and Ascot. We took him to Lingfield a fortnight before he won the Ousden and, with Ascot in mind, we will do the same again – maybe on the turf, we will see.”
Saville Road, who won a six-furlong Doncaster maiden on his debut, has already contested a Group Two, having finished mid-division in the Gimcrack Stakes last summer.
