Distance the key for Maggie

Newmarket trainer Chris Wall is hopeful his star filly Wake Up Maggie will stay the mile in the Stan James 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

The daughter of Xaar has yet to race beyond six furlongs but Wall said: “The indications are that she will stay. She relaxes in her races so she will give herself every chance of staying the mile.

“She might not want it too soft. Although we’ve had some rain it is due to warm up later in the week and the fast side of good wouldn’t be a problem to her.”

Wake Up Maggie rounded off her juvenile campaign with a keeping-on second, beaten a neck, to Donna Blini in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket in September, a run that entitled her to be considered a Guineas filly.

“All is well with her. She did a piece of work at the weekend and that went very satisfactorily so we are all systems go and hope we get a good week with her,” Wall added.
