Adam Kirby rode his first winner for new boss Clive Cox when Pearly Wey produced a 40-1 shock in the opening Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Maiden Stakes at Newmarket.

Three-pound claimer Kirby became attached to the Hungerford handler earlier this year and the manner in which he rode the Lujain gelding to success suggests there will be many more good days to come.

Mr Sandicliffe and Pititana disputed the lead for much of the six-furlong event but it was Cox’s debutant that had the final say.

Kirby switched him right off the rail and the pair surged clear well inside the final furlong to score by one and a quarter lengths from serial runner-up Mr Sandicliffe.

Cox said: “That was just the job. He’s done it very professionally. I’m delighted with the way he has acquitted himself there.

“He had a hold-up last year so we didn’t run him but he’s always promised us at home that he would be alright.”
