Bell set to ring the changes

Michael Bell has been inundated with calls from jockeys wanting to ride Motivator in the Baileys Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on September 10.

The Newmarket trainer is looking for a new rider for his Derby hero after regular partner Johnny Murtagh was hit with a 21-day suspension for striking Pat Smullen at Leopardstown on Sunday.

“There isn’t a jockey in the top ten whose agent hasn’t rung up for the ride,” revealed Bell. “We’re in a strong position and a lot of people are very keen.”

Murtagh would be allowed to ride the Montjeu colt in the Prix Niel at Longchamp on September 11 as Murtagh’s ban only comes into effect when there is racing in Ireland.

However, Bell insists the Group One event at Leopardstown is the preferred destination for his star three-year-old.

“We are aware that Johnny would be able to ride in the Prix Niel but that race is our least favoured option as I would rather not go to Longchamp before the Arc,” Bell told the Racing Post.

“Our favoured option is the Irish Champion and if the ground is right that’s where he’ll go.”
