Arch aims for Goodwood repeat
Montgomery’s Arch is on course to return to the scene of his biggest win when lining up for next Tuesday’s Group Two Betfair Cup at Glorious Goodwood.
The Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained colt landed the six-furlong Richmond Stakes at the meeting 12 months ago but has failed to find the winner’s enclosure in his four subsequent outings.
However, he returned home sick from his latest run which came in the middle of May when he finished 12th in the French 2000 Guineas.
The son of Arch charge has been showing up well on the Newmarket gallops in the past month, though, and is scheduled for his reappearance at the Sussex track in the race registered as the Lennox Stakes.
Speaking on his website, www.peterchapplehyam.com, the trainer said: “Montgomery’s Arch will run in the Lennox Stakes. He is working really well and he seems to be back to his best.
“His last piece of work was on Tuesday and he’ll have a stiff bit on Friday just to find out for sure that he’s fit enough, but he looks fit enough to me
“The seven furlongs will be a slight step back in trip but that shouldn’t worry him – it will probably be right up his street.
“Alan Munro has agreed to ride him. He has sat on him recently and will do so again when he works on Friday.”
A total of 25 horses have been entered for the £125,000 (€179.500)-added contest over seven furlongs including the Nayyir, the winner in both 2002 and 2003, Galeota, Autumn Glory and Le Vie Dei Colori.
