This month’s Hewlett-Packard Galway Plate, worth €200,000, will be the most valuable race ever staged at the Galway Festival.

The valuable handicap chase will be run on Wednesday, July 27, the third of seven consecutive days of action at the track, which has a total prize fund of €1.7m.

The Guinness Galway Hurdle on the Thursday is worth €190,000, the biggest prize fund of any hurdle run in Ireland this year.

The winner of the opening day’s GPT Amateur Handicap will qualify for a €50,000 bonus should they then triumph in the Galway Hurdle.

Athy Spirit in 1990 and Try A Brandy two years earlier are the last two horses to have completed the double.
