2000 Guineas odds tighten after run by George
Bookmakers cut the odds of George Washington for next year’s 2000 Guineas even though the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt ran out only a workmanlike winner at the Curragh yesterday.
The 2-5 favourite was continuing his trainer’s domination of the Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks Railway Stakes when he swooped to take the Group Two prize.
The Ballydoyle handler has won the six-furlong contest on no less that six previous occasions.
George Washington pulled hard for his head in the early stages, but Kieren Fallon got the colt settled before laying down his challenge in the final two furlongs to beat stablemate Amigoni cosily by three-quarters of a length.
O’Brien said: “I was delighted with him. It was a very slow pace and they only raced for two furlongs.
“Ideally we would have preferred a faster pace. He has a lot of speed and it took Kieren a little time to get him switched off.
“I don’t think a step up in trip would be a problem in the future.”
Ladbrokes cut George Washington’s odds for the 2000 Guineas from 20-1 to 14-1, while totesport and Cashmans go 16-1 from the same price.
