Proclamation pounces

Proclamation produced a terrific performance to land the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot at York today.

The Jeremy Noseda-trained colt (7-1) overcame an unfavourable draw in stall 20 to come with a storming run inside the final furlong and beat Henry Cecil’s Camacho by two and a half lengths.

Home Affairs, sent off the 4-1 favourite, was a further half-length back in third.

Beaten just once in his three previous starts - ironically here in the 10-furlong Dante Stakes - the son of King's Best was given a patient ride by Johnny Murtagh and gradually crept into the race up the straight.

Camacho, bidding to give Cecil a 71st winner at the illustrious meeting, looked to be going as well, if not better, than anything two out but had no answer as the winner swept by.

Murtagh told At The Races: "I let him drift around the outside and he quickened very well. I gave him a backhander and it was all over.

“He is a very high-class horse but he has maybe got a bit too much speed (for longer distances). I think seven furlongs or a mile might be his trip.

“I think he’ll improve for the run. Mentally he is starting to get into it now and enjoy his racing and there’s still more to come.”
