Leger all set to lay down the Law

Rule Of Law remains firmly on course for Saturday’s betfair.com St Leger at Doncaster after pleasing connections in a spin on Monday morning.

The Kingmambo colt worked under big-race pilot Kerrin McEvoy ahead of the final Classic of the season when he will be stepping up to a mile and three-quarters for the first time.

The Epsom Derby runner-up is the 9-4 market leader with Ladbrokes after winning the Great Volitgeur Stakes last time out and Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford has issued an upbeat bulletin.

“He worked this morning and everything is in order. He just had an easy bit of work as, obviously, he was ready well before today for the race,” he said.

“He’s very well, in good order and Kerrin was pleased with how he went. He’s on course for Doncaster.”

Rule Of Law has shown form on a variety of ground and Crisford admits “anything goes” for him in terms of conditions.

However, connections of the Michael Stoute-trained Quiff are worried about the drying ground on Town Moor for the second favourite.

The daughter of Sadler’s Wells won the Yorkshire Oaks on soft ground but she might miss out if the ground is firm, prompting Ladbrokes to shorten Rule Of Law up from 5-2.

“Rule Of Law is our biggest and only loser in the book. He will take out circa £300,000 (€440,587) in our ante-post book if he obliges,” said Balthazar Fabricius of Ladbrokes.

“We have been keen to accommodate clients as much as possible on the Godolphin runner because we were so sweet on Quiff. But obviously there are now going concerns for the Yorkshire Oaks winner so we are faced with a genuine concern as regards McEvoy’s mount.”

A total of 13 runners were left in the race at the five-day stage with Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien leaving in five – Tycoon, Go For Gold, Acropolis, Mikado and Two Miles West.

Should Quiff miss out, Stoute also has Gordon Stakes winner Maraahel in the race.

Angus Gold, racing manager to Maraahel’s owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: “We’ll be reviewing the situation during the week. We have to keep an eye on the weather and everything else. Hopefully he’ll be there.

“I know Sir Michael seems happy with the horse.”

Percussionist has also stood his ground but John Gosden’s charge is not certain to run.

The son of Sadler’s Wells was last seen when finishing tailed off behind Grey Swallow in the Irish Derby.

Percussionist had previously finished fourth at Epsom but the Sangster family-owned colt has a number of other options.

“We have got an open mind with him and we want to see what is in the Prix Niel at Longchamp and the Arc trial at Newbury a week on Saturday,” said Ben Sangster.

“He’s in very good form but the bottom line with this horse is that we will do what’s right for him.

"We will probably make a decision on Wednesday or Thursday,” he added.
