Cork appeals lodged at the Turf Club

Connections of the two horses disqualified from first and second places for taking the wrong course in an amateur riders’ chase at Cork on Sunday have lodged appeals to the Irish Turf Club.

The Camden Racing Syndicate, owners of the winner Teo Perugo, plus the horse’s rider Derek O'Connor hope to get the decision reversed as does Daryl Deacon trainer of the runner-up, Ceannairceach.

The fourth home Golden Beacon was also disqualified.

The problem in the Mallow Handicap Chase arose at the fifth fence in the two-mile contest, which had to be omitted because the ground was considered unsafe.

The runners should have bypassed the fence to the right, but most of them went to the left instead and they were deemed to have taken the wrong course.

The race was awarded to the third home, 10-1 shot Bregogue, who was ridden by Michael O’Connor and had originally been beaten a total of 19 lengths.

Fifth home Sweet Citizen (20-1) was promoted to second after being deemed the only other runner to have finished.

Bregogue is trained by Helen O’Keeffe, while Sweet Citizen is with Eugene O’Sullivan, who is also the trainer of first past the post Teo Perugo.

A date for the hearing has yet to be arranged.
