Godolphin bank on Sulamani for third Tattersalls triumph
Sulamani bids to continue Godolphin’s good fortune in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on Sunday when partnered for the first time by Australian Kerrin McEvoy.
The jockey replaces the injured Frankie Dettori aboard the five-year-old, who is one of seven horses that have been declared for the Group One contest, alongside stablemate Naheef.
“It has been a fantastic race for us as we have won it with Fantastic Light (2001) and Daylami (1998),” said Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford.
“Sulamani is in good form and we are delighted with the way he has progressed physically during the winter.
“This is a nice race to start him off in but we want to see him run before we start looking at other races for him and we are just running Naheef to ensure it’s a true run race.”
Sulamani will be having his first European start since July last year when runner-up to Alamshar in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.
Following that defeat, the son of Hernando went on to land the Arlington Million and the Turf Classic Invitational Stakes before a below-par run in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Other British entries in the 10-furlong race are Richard Hannon’s Nysaean and Private Charter, trained by Barry Hills.
Ballydoyle handler Aidan O’Brien will saddle Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Powerscourt with other Irish challengers being Napper Tandy and Livadiya, who is also declared for today’s Ridgewood Pearl Stakes.
