Indy Five Hundred takes Belmont honours

Dermot Weld’s Dimitrova could finish only second as Indy Five Hundred stormed home in the 244,000 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Belmont Park in America.

The Irish-trained filly was bidding for a win in America this season after an earlier victory in the American Oaks.

Dimitrova was in front in the middle of the straight, but Pat Day pushed on Indy Five Hundred and she came from the back of the pack to collar Dimitrova in the middle of the straight before easing away to a four-length victory.

“This has been the best weekend of my life,” owner Peter Minikes, who won the Gazelle Handicap with the Brian Meehan-trained Buy the Sport at Belmont on Saturday, told www.thoroughbredtimes.com.

Trainer Bobby Barbara said: “Pat said she broke fine and as soon as he put his hands on her mouth, she just threw her head and then spit it out and he just left her alone.

“He said he was so full of horse at the three-eighths pole, she just wanted to explode turning for home.”

The French raider Campsie Fells finished in third for Henri-Alex Pantall, another two and a quarter lengths away.
