Accolade targetting Newmarket
Royal Ascot winner High Accolade is set to take on older horses for the first time in the £100,000 (€145,000) Princess of Wales’s UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation Stakes at Newmarket on Tuesday.
Successful in the King Edward VII Stakes, the son of Mark of Esteem is one of just two three-year-olds among nine horses confirmed today for the Group Two contest over a mile and a half.
The other is the John Gosden-trained Summerland, who was beaten three lengths into third place by High Accolade in the ‘Ascot Derby’.
“At the moment High Accolade is an intended runner,” said trainer Marcus Tregoning.
The Lambourn trainer has mapped out a plan for the colt that hopefully will culminate in a crack at the St Leger at Doncaster in September.
“If he runs next week it will be at Newmarket, then he’ll go for the Great Voltigeur, then we’ll see about the St Leger,” he said.
“He’s in good form and the chances are he’ll take his chance.”
Last year’s winner Millenary may bid for a repeat and he could be joined by Bollin Eric, the hero of last season’s Doncaster Classic.
Mark Johnston has left in both Bandari and Zindabad, while Sir Michael Stoute is also double-handed through Gamut and Princely Venture.
Completing the nine-strong line-up is Rawyaan, giving Summerland’s trainer Gosden two possibles.
