Dettori confident of better run from Sails

Frankie Dettori is expecting Lateen Sails to put his poor run in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas well behind him at York tomorrow.

The son of Elmaamul is due to contest the Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes after finishing last behind Refuse To Bend at Newmarket last time.

Lateen Sails was having only the second start of his life on that occasion and Dettori is confident the colt can put that run behind him.

“I would say you’ll se a different horse on a much fairer track in the Glasgow Stakes,” Dettori told attheraces.

“Whereas the winner had quite a hard campaign as a two-year-old my horse only had the one run and he spent all the race looking at the group without concentrating and getting his head down and racing.

“By the time he got to the brow of the hill he had just got himself exhausted because he wasn’t concentrating on running at an even rhythm. He just spent the whole race looking at the big field next to him.”

The Glasgow Stakes, a Listed race over a mile and a quarter, does not usually attract a large field and Dettori thinks a small field could benefit the Vodafone Derby entrant.

He added: “The Glasgow doesn’t usually attract more then six or eight runners and is should be a good stepping stone for things to come later on.

“I always liked him and I would write the Newmarket race off.”

Dettori also revealed Pugin is the likely Godolphin representative in the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on the same day.

The five-year-old, who was recruited from John Oxx last season, disappointed in the Melbourne Cup but he ran twice in Dubai over the winter.

Last time he finished ninth behind Sulamani in the Dubai Sheema Classic and Dettori is sure he will turn in a better showing on the Knavesmire.

“I think Pugin is the likely runner in the race. He’s done really well actually,” explained Dettori.

“He’s a very big horse so we hope that he comes through and he could develop into a nice Gold Cup horse.”
