Racing: Grand National winning trainer '50-50' to continue
Nigel Twiston-Davies is set to carry on handling Grand National hero Bindaree despite declaring he may hand in his trainer's licence.
Twiston-Davies dropped the bombshell at a press conference after Jim Culloty had partnered the chestnut gelding to a hard-earned win over What's Up Boys at Aintree.
But as Bindaree paraded before the cameras at his Naunton, Cheltenham stables today, Twiston-Davies stated that his mind was not fully made up as far as the future was concerned.
He commented: "Giving up training is an option which I must consider but in any case it will be a case of downsizing on what we are doing now.
"I've had one or two owners on the phone since yesterday asking me what's happening and the answer to that is I don't really know right at this moment.
"If I think I can assemble a good enough team for next season I may carry on but it's very much 50-50. However, we are definitely selling the bottom yard and that will be on the market shortly.
"Training is profitable and I'm not complaining about the actual finances but we were in the top league for a lot of years but at present we haven't got the owners with enough financial muscle that other yards have got."
Twiston-Davies' business partner and former champion jockey Peter Scudamore said: "Nigel's very competitive and he doesn't like bumping along at the bottom with bad horses any more than I do. But winning the National has put a different complexion on things.
"If Nigel carries on I am all too glad to carry on being his assistant, well more to the point, his business partner.
"If he gave up I would have to consider taking out a licence but that would be very difficult with all my media work so I'd like Nigel to carry on."
