Horse Racing: Holland out to clear his name

Darryll Holland will appeal on Wednesday against the one-day ban he received at Southwell last week for alleged careless riding on Hormuz.

As a result of the ban, Holland has already lost out on one of his options for Saturday’s randombet.com Lincoln Faithful Warrior for whom Barry Hills has booked Pat Eddery.

But it is not with the Lincoln in mind that Holland makes his appeal, more because he feels the decision was harsh.

Holland’s agent, Matt Chapman, said: ‘‘We’re not appealing because we’re banned for the Lincoln, we’re appealing because we feel Darryll did nothing wrong.

‘‘We accept there was some minor interference in the race concerned, but we’ve watched the tape 20-odd times and in no way can we see Darryll was careless. He had his whip in the correct hand and did everything he could to keep Hormuz straight.

‘‘Obviously, it’s all about opinion, but I haven’t spoken to a single person - trainer, journalist or jockey - who thought he was careless. Michael Caulfield also thought we should appeal.’’

Chapman added: ‘‘The time when appeals were pointless has gone the stewards at Portman Square do listen. We hope they clear Darryll’s name.’’
