Representing the United Arab Emirates, Dettori scored 16 points to pip Australian Damien Oliver by one point.

French rider Oliver Peslier was a further point away in third.

Dettori enjoyed the best possible start with victory in the first of the three races on short-priced favourite Noble Boy.

He finished third in the other two legs on Super Splendid and Kindred Spirits.

Dettori said: "It was a good thing I was on the hot favourite because you need at least one winner.

"But it was all down to luck and the real business starts on Sunday."
