Fastnet set to strike

Fastnet Mist, unraced as a juvenile, has got better and better in three runs this season and should now be ready to strike in the concluding Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fillies Maiden at Leopardstown tonight.

Her latest performance, at Naas last month, was easily her best so far and there is every reason to believe David Wachman’s charge will build on that.

The Naas race was a ten furlongs Listed event and the selection, understandably, went off a largely unconsidered 20-1 shot. But Fastnet Mist ran with real promise, doing good work at the end to claim fourth spot behind three smart horses in Carla Bianca, Palace and Circling. Stepping up another two furlongs in trip now looks very much to her advantage.

Dermot Weld’s once-raced Starlet, a daughter of Sea The Stars, is the big worry. She made an eye-catching debut on this track 26 days ago when five lengths runner-up behind her stable companion, Carla Bianca.

The form is working out really well, with Shell House (fourth) and Leaf (fifth) both winning next time.

Weld can provide the solution to the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Maiden with another with just a single outing under her belt, Sarafiyla. This daughter of Azamour made a solid start when third behind Shell House and Sea Coast on this track, only tiring in the closing stages.

Jim Bolger’s News At Six has to be fancied to complete a hat trick in the Peter Hook And The Light Race. Hopefully the surface will dry out plenty, it was on the soft side yesterday, because he has looked altogether a different proposition since meeting quick ground in scoring at the Curragh and Fairyhouse.
