Jansboy and Prince make it another Winters day

Michael Winters continued his splendid run when Jansboy landed the Join The Tipperary Supporters’ Club 2014 Maiden Hurdle at Tipperary yesterday.

Jansboy and Prince make it another Winters day

Partnered by Pierce Gallagher, the six-year-old forged to the front off the home turn and found plenty to easily hold Do Na Paisti.

“He will go on any ground and is a good solid little horse,” reported Winters. “He will stay hurdling for a bit, before going chasing.”

Jansboy was a first success on the track for his owner, Tom Barry, from Killavullen, Co Cork.

Barry used to own point-to-point winner Teaforthree, who went to on to land the four-mile National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham for Rebecca Curtis.

Winters completed a double when Bryan Cooped guided Moon Prince to a short head victory over the gambled-on Back To Drumdeel in the @Tipperaryraces On Twitter Handicap Hurdle.

The pair had a real battle from the last, with the winner just getting the best of the fight, despite drifting towards the stands.

Moon Prince is now an 11-year-old, having returned to action following a break of some three years at Ballinrobe, and got into the contest as second reserve.

“We exercised him in the morning and then got the call he would be able to run,” revealed Winters. “But he was fine and fresh in himself.”

Willie Mullins’ French import Arctic Fire totally outclassed the opposition in the Follow Tipperary Races On Facebook Maiden Hurdle.

He cruised through the contest for Ruby Walsh and led between the last two to easily beat Enchanted Forest.

Said Walsh: “He settled well and jumped and travelled well.”

Walsh and Mullins were on the mark again when Darroun landed the www.tipperaryraces.ie Beginners Chase.

The grey hadn’t displayed a whole lot of enthusiasm of late, but this was a bad race and he won by 20 lengths.

Walsh sent him about his business turning in and Darroun eased away to easily beat the long time leader, Carhue.

The modest The Schooling At Tipperary Beginners Chase went to the Arthur Goulding-trained Sox’s Girl, adding to Bryan Cooper’s gains earlier on aboard Moon Prince.

Cooper drove the winner up to challenge Ashbury over the final fence and Sox’s Girl eased away on the flat.

“She wants good or faster ground and could go to Limerick next Monday for a mares’ handicap hurdle,” said Goulding.

Bookmakers, badly in need of some respite, after five favourites had obliged, got it in the Bumper when 16-1 shot, Star Counsel, turned over the favourite, Chute Hall.

The market leader was backed from 7-4 to 5-4 and was sent about his business early on the final circuit by Robbie McNamara. He came under pressure early in the straight, however, and had no answer when Jane Mangan swept the winner past.

Star Counsel is trained at Castlelyons, Co Cork by Edmond Kent, who said: “She will probably go hurdling now, she is an exceptional jumper.”

Decade Player, sixth behind Dick Dundee at Listowel, found his level in the moderate Tipperary Handicap Chase.

Ridden by Paul Townend, he made every yard of the running to beat Musawama by six lengths.
