Blinkers can have the desired effect on Glimpse

DERMOT WELD, fresh from saddling Princess Highway to record a brilliant success in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot on Thursday, turns his attentions to much lesser pickings with Quick Glimpse in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Maiden at Down Royal this afternoon and the three-year-old is the nap choice.

Blinkers can have the desired effect on Glimpse

Unraced as a juvenile, the daughter of Galileo had produced two solid efforts so far this campaign and should be ready to strike.

At Cork last month she finished a creditable fourth behind Montebell, in a contest which has been working out reasonably well.

Quick Glimpse then headed to Clonmel and was beaten three parts of a length into second by the Tommy Stack-trained, and heavily-backed, Queen’s Visit.

Weld now fits blinkers on his charge for the first time, often a positive sign with this yard, and, favourably drawn, Quick Glimpse is the one to beat.

Shamiran, despite racing from 7lbs out of the handicap, gets a hopeful nod in the featured Magniers’ Ulster Derby. The booking of 5lbs claimer, Conor Hoban, is a help and Shamiran will revel in the soft ground, on the evidence of his success over flights at the Punchestown festival in late April.

Jim Bolger’s Livia Galilei may provide the answer to the EBF Cooolmore Stud Ulster Oaks Fillies Handicap. She will handle the surface and stays further then this extended ten furlongs.

At the Curragh last time, over a mile and a half, Livia Galilei stayed on powerfully to beat Glamorous and could be up to shrugging off an 8lbs rise in the weights.

Andrew Oliver has his team in terrific shape and Hard Yards, third behind Gale Force Ten at the Curragh, can prove another for him in the Rainbow Communications EBF Median Auction Maiden.

At Gowran tomorrow, where the ground is likely to be very testing, take a chance on Louisville Lip in the Jack Duggan Memorial Handicap Hurdle. A real mud-lark, he powered through the heavy ground at Navan last time to easily win a 12 furlongs handicap on the flat. The surface will be far from ideal for Discoteca, but this rapidly improving sort has to be fancied to complete a hat-trick in the www.gowranpark.ie Hurdle.

It will be interesting to note whether Tony Martin allows Thomas Edison face the starter in the Goresbridge Maiden Hurdle.

The ground certainly won’t suit him either, but he is a promising talent, having beaten subsequent Cheltenham festival hero, Champagne Fever, in a bumper at Leopardstown at Christmas.
