Breedsbreeze destroys opposition
The William Codd-trained Breedsbreeze, winner of the 2008 renewal of the Grade 1 Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton when under the care of Paul Nicholls, certainly vindicated this accepted maxim by destroying the opposition in the 22-runner open at yesterday’s marathon Kilkenny Foxhounds point-to-point meeting at Milltown.
Breedsbreeze (6/1), a creditable fourth on his return to points duty at Dromahane two weeks earlier, travelled stylishly en-route to picking up the running after the penultimate of the 15 obstacles. The victorious nine-year-old then displayed his track pace in the closing stages by storming clear to repel The Mull by two and a half lengths with the mare Tally Em Up running an excellent race to return a further seven lengths adrift in third spot.
Said owner/trainer Codd: “We felt that this fellow would improve 20/30 lengths for his run at Dromahane. The main thing is that we know that his enthusiasm is there and the aim now will be some of the big hunter chases in the spring.”
Codd and Breedsbreeze’s rider Jason McKeown went away with two winners for they also landed the second division of the six-year-old geldings’ maiden with The Amarillo Kid. Well supported from 4/1 into 2/1 favourite, The Amarillo Kid overcame a final fence mistake to beat the hugely-promising newcomer In The Post.
James Rath was another in double form, both of his winners being supplied by Cleariestown-based owner/trainer John Moran. The pair got off the mark with ex-hurdler Edmundo (10/1) in the third division of the five-year-old geldings’ maiden and Forgot To Dance (10/1) completed the double by gamely making all in the first division of the five-year-old mares’ maiden.
