Charlton in full cry over Cambridgeshire hope
Cry Fury fits the bill of a relatively unexposed three-year-old, the likes of which have a very good record in the race.
While he ran over a mile at Doncaster last time, his victory over 10 furlongs at Goodwood suggests stamina will not be an issue.
The Beckhampton handler said: “Cry Fury is a progressive three-year-old, but there could be half a dozen of those in the field, so who knows.
“People think you’re aiming them for the race, but you can either win a race for five grand, or run in one worth a hundred, and you can still have a nice horse for next year.
“I think you need a Group horse really, it’s a tough race.
“I was quite happy with Cry Fury’s run at Doncaster. It was the first time he’d run over either a mile or on a straight course. They went no pace early and then quickened from the front, but he was only beaten just over three lengths.
“I think you need to be a 10-furlong horse to win. When you get big fields they tend to go a bit quicker than normal, so you really need to get the trip.”
Richard Hughes gets the ride on Cry Fury and fancies his chances of adding to his one win in the race – which came for Charlton.
“He’s a nice horse, he’s improving.
“I’ve won the Cambridgeshire on one for Roger before (Cap Juluca, 1995) and he doesn’t often ring me unless he fancies them,” said Hughes.
