Fountain poised to strike

TWO particularly tricky cards at Down Royal and Wexford tonight will test the skills of punters, but one who is fancied to oblige is Fountain Of Honour in the last up north, the Guinness EBF Maiden for fillies.

Fountain poised to strike

She was due to run at the Curragh last Saturday, but was taken out when the rain came and is obviously reasonably well regarded by the Tommy Stack yard.

The daughter of Sadler’s Wells made her debut at Cork in April, finishing fifth to Sapphire Pendant, after running far too freely in the early stages.

The three-year-old then reappeared at the Curragh last month and seemed far more relaxed.

She was ridden in mid-field, before staying on nicely at the end to be beaten a length and a half into second by shock winner, Terminal Velocity.

There is nothing earth-shattering about the form, but there was plenty to like about the way the selection shaped and she has lots of scope for improvement.

At Wexford Black Belt, who did us a favour at Ballinrobe on Monday night, can enjoy another success in the Blackstairs Claiming Race.

Tracey Collins’ filly bounded clear in the straight at Ballinrobe to take a maiden by an easy two and a half lengths, after the rain had arrived to increase her prospects.

The surface now may well be far from ideal, but this is a weak heat and Black Belt has plenty in hand at the weights.

Michael Halford’s Sonapour gets the nod in the Clonard Maiden, having been strongly fancied when only sixth to Saddler’s Rock at Tipperary. Perhaps, too much use was made of him on that occasion.
