Glory days for Ascot punters

FAME And Glory ensured bookmakers got their fingers burnt when justifying overwhelming public support in the Gold Cup.

The layers had one of their best days for years at Royal Ascot on Wednesday, but only ended up throwing away a lot of their gains in one fell swoop.

As fast as the bookies could reduce the price of Aidan O’Brien’s latest staying sensation, punters came back with more money. The early 9-4, 2-1 and 15-8 soon vanished, with many big bets recorded including £90,000 to £40,000, £54,000 to £24,000.

Paddy Power, for the Irish bookmakers of the same name, said: “We’ve enjoyed mixed fortunes today as we were taught a lesson about going best price when Fame And Glory romped home costing us a seven-figure sum.
