JOCKEY Hadden Frost was banned for 12 days after riding a finish a circuit too early on Romney Marsh in the ladbrokespoker.com Handicap Chase at Folkestone yesterday.

Frost banned after costly Folkestone gaffe

He had set up a big lead on the Roger Curtis-trained 10-year-old over his four rivals in the three-mile-one-furlong contest, and eased his mount right down as he went past the winning post.

The jockey had only realised his mistake when the other horses galloped past him.

Frost then tried to get the 8-1 chance back into the race, but it proved out of the question and he eventually pulled up his mount.

The Ben Pollock-trained Delgany Gunner (2-1) went on to land the spoils by 32 lengths in the hands of 5lb claimer Giles Hawkins.

Frost was subsequently suspended 12 days. The young jockey will be forced onto the sidelines between March 1-12, which means he is still able to ride at the Cheltenham Festival.

A sombre Frost said afterwards: “I just want to apologise to everybody. I don't really know what to say but I’m really sorry, especially to the owners and Mr Curtis who’s been really good to me. I’ll make sure I don’t do it again.”

Frost is having his best season to date with 14 winners, although he has not ridden one for three months.
